HOW TO GUIDE FOR FC ONLINE

Post by Sneaky Scot »

I dug out my FC set and took it to the Veteran's Wargaming Association here in the UK. We had a game where 4 of us played, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Someone asked if we could play online, to which I replied "sure, I think there's a client, I'll have a look."

I have downloaded the demo version of the game, and it all seems rather impenetrable to a new player. I tried emailing the gentleman from the teacher's page, but that comes back as undeliverable.

Is there an idiot's guide that tells idiots (i.e. me) how to set up and play FC Online? I'd be interested in trying it solo so I can tell the others how to do things, but I'd also want to know how to set of a game for the other players. We're all quite keen on giving this a go, but I don't want to spend money if I can't figure out how to use the client!

Any help, suggestions, "how to" guides or other ways to guide a new player through the client would be massively appreciated.

Sorry. Currently, I have not gotten around to updated YouTube videos on how to setup that.

There is a playlist that should help. It is located at:

Thanks Paul, I managed to get ships on the map, conduct EA, and move them. I'd like to try a solo Fed CA vs Klingon D7, but when I tried that the client assumed that as the same player had put the ships on the map, they were allied and I couldn't shoot! What would I need to do different to run a solo game?

There is a checkbox beside the drop down list of the targets called "All Units." Click on that checkbox and all of the units (both friendly and not so friendly) will be listed and you can target the weapons at those units,

Thanks Paul, up and running now with subscription. I have some questions if you or one of the team is OK to answer them.

Is turn mode displayed anywhere?
Defensive fire - I triggered an ESG to destroy 3 drones, but couldn't work out how to only use the required 3 points of energy. When I just hit the fire button, the ESG capacitor stays at the same level, so I think I'm doing something wrong there.
When drones hit during the movement phase, is there a mechanism to show hw they "impact" on the target and "stick" to the shield until the defensive fire phase?

Firing ESG - Let me look into that. You should be able to select the amount of power you are using and that should adjust the current power. (i.e. how much can be used with the next time you fired)

Mechanism for tracking impact - unfortunately, currently there is no mechanism that is part of the client. Currently, you should just move the drone with the unit and also note what shield it impacted on. I will add this as a feature request to be implemented as part of a future release.

P.S. Sorry for the delay in responding.

Not a problem, thanks for taking the time. I have now found turns modes, rrepair charts, H&R raids etc. I do have questions on 3 areas related to repairs:

1. At the end of the turn you can rotate 5 points of damage to an adjacent shield. How do we do that using the tool?
2. At the end of the turn, damage control generates repair points. I can'r see how to use these.
3. Finally, during EA one of the columns is for repair, which i assume means shield repair. I can spend the energy, but can't see how to fix the shield boxes.

Sorry for yet another raft of questions....

Aha, figured it out! Played our first game on Sunday, 3 of us in the UK and one in NZ! Great fun had by all, I think you have some new subscribers!! Two Klingon F5W have run across 2 Kzinti DW; space is full of drones, phaser blasts and disruptor bolts!!

Hi Paul,

I opened up my Fed Cdr online today and started a new game. I got the chat room, the set up new game, and when I hit the "go" button the units tab and movement/control tab appear, but no map. I re-downloaded the client (version 4.5.3) and tried again, but got the same result. Not sure if there's an issue or I'm just an idiot (which I never rule out).

Grateful for any help/advice.

No Map?

Maybe you have the map window set to be a 'floating' window?

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for trying to help me. "Float windows" is selected in the options (which I've never changed). I unticked, same result. I re-ticked it, same result. I get the piece list / game control window, the units window, the client window, and the games window. No map. I checked for an update and restarted the client, still no joy. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Steve

It sounds to me like you can see your 'Piece List/Game Control' window but not the Game Room itself (which is the map). I have the same version of the client and have not had this problem.
My apologies if I'm stating the obvious but is it possible that you have minimized the Game Room somewhere on you screen? If so, you could use ALT+TAB to scroll through all open windows.
