Ranger Quick Start Ruleset?

Post by Dal Downing »

Okay with the Ranger Program spinning back perhaps it time we as Rangers look at the possibility of writing are own "Ranger Quick Start" type booklet.

Ideally we should cover the basic mechanics in a couple of pages.

ACTASF Shouldn't be too bad if we could keep it to about 4 to 6 Special Actions. No Shuttles. no Drones... Maybe look at the mini-rulebooks that came with the 2500s box sets.

SFB we should be able to pull what we need from the Cadet Training Manual.

FedCom should also not be too bad. It already has First Missions.

SFBF maybe something along the lines of SJG Rigged Munchkin game just to show how to start and play a round or 2.

For the RPG s short senerio using an APT and story based on the "Intruder Alert" SFB senerio, type situation.

SFM we should be able to write a small skirmish for this one.

F&E well not sure we can strip it down enough...

For " Cadet" ships use the Fleet Scale template. Maybe do them like the Hybrid Sheets in Captains log? Maybe include as Fed CA/CC and DW and a Klingon D7/D7C and F5 or F5W. 2 ships only because you might want some varsity in ACTASF and Star Amanda.

For a monster could we include a Space Ameba like the old article SVC wrote but was never published?

What are people's thoughts on this?

I believe that there is already an effort to do a quick start ruleset for ACTASF

Hi Dal,
Your suggestion is on the money.

If you go to the "Aids & Info" sub-forum I've posted the links from the handbook and added the ones to all the "learn to play" resources.

I also made a post in here requesting people submit scenarios to use for demos, but haven't gotten anything yet. If you have some email them to me and I'll run them by SVC

Already working on this. Had hoped to have it done already, but real life has a way of rearing its ugly head and we (the Thomas family) had a couple of major health care issues these last couple of weeks.

The plan is:
Short ACTASF demo guide, then a free downloadable, stream-lined version of ACTASF.
The hard part is further condensing ACTASF without impinging on it's SFU feel.

Once it's done, I'll let the Rangers take a look and offer suggestions on what else could be removed, or what means to be re-instated.

For ACTASF, just make a hand out with basic rules, no orders, drones, etc.. And only have 2 factions in it with 2 ships. Just to get peoples interest. Then have a blurb about the extra rules not covered in the hand out.
