Yeah, I've been reading those off and on. The discus BBS is a good place to get a lot of information.Nerroth wrote:There are discussion threads for Module X2 and for the Xorks over on the Discus BBS, along with a range of proposal/speculation/discussion threads for other would-be future products for SFB (and for other game systems, not least for the strategic-level wargame Federation and Empire).
So I plan to buy all of the FedComm products next month.

rjl518 - Continuing to read your log, great stuff.
I was thinking it would be fun to play out a larger story scenario sometime, with multiple participants playing each section.
For example, a Klingon strike at a starbase. One person/group plays out the starbase attack, another plays out the delaying action against the Fed reinforcements, while another person/group plays out a rescue from the planet near the starbase.
Put it all together once everyone is finished and see how it all went.

Don't know how I missed this earlier, but:rjl518 wrote:today I ordered the rest of the fedcom set...

Heck yeah, go for it. It is more complicated and has like an order of magnitude more rules. It is also (I gather) harder to find players for it than for Federation Commander, Armada, etc. but it has a ton of background information, a more complete history, zillions of ships that haven't made the transition to Federation Commander, and if you like complexity in your gaming it's fun.
I'm going to finish out my SFB collection the next time I have money to spare. I have most of it already, but most of that was purchased in the mid-late 90s. I'm still debating if I want to get the updated rulebooks and SSD books or if I just want to stick with what I have (it's not like I'll play in any tournaments).
Anyway, I mean I'm pretty biased because SFB was my favorite game for the longest time, but I do think it's worth it to at least check it out.

Also, some would advise that buying a portion of the game (say and getting settled into the rules with the Basic Set + maybe the Advanced Missions) before diving in all the way.
I mean, Star Fleet Battles is a big game with hundreds of ships and lots and lots and lots of rules (fighters, fast patrol ships, terrain, multiple kinds of direct fire weapons, variations on the seeking weapons, cloaking devices, etc).
Like yeah, Federation Commander has a lot of those things but their interactions tend to be more complicated and there's more to keep track of.
