Drone version of the CA

Post by markgeorgetwo »

I know the drone version of a CA is called a CD in the fleet listings what i want to know is this ship is going to be a ship card or is it easy to convert a CA card to drone version.

For the CD, aren't the 4 photons replaced with 6 drone launchers?

Is its control still limited to 6 drones, or can it control 12?

The USS Agincourt (Federation CAD) replaces the four Photon Torpedo mounts with 6 drone launchers, and adds two Special Sensor boxes to the saucer section.

Those are the only changes between the CA and the CAD in Star Fleet Battles.
Since Special Sensors are BoM only in Fed Comm, I'm guessing you could just replace the torpedoes with drones and call it good.

Actually, it adds four cargo boxes, too.

Geez, I never really realized how ridiculous the ship is. It takes a fully refitted CAR and simply adds eight boxes (two drones, two sensors, and four cargo) for free with no penalty. Definitely one of the more munchkin ships* in SFB. Not sure I even want to see it in FC.

One other point: special sensors aren't really BoM. They are part of the RRB without special note. I am pretty sure that the RRB version of the special sensor rules are pretty much base rules at this point.

[* What do I think it would take to make it less munchkin? Have the special sensors replace the two FH phasers, rather than just be added for free. Have the cargo replace four lab boxes, rather than just be added for free. I'll give the two free drone boxes a grudging pass. But the sensors and cargo should have been added at cost.]

Never looked at the conversion in enough detail to realize the support systems were just tacked onto the ship without displacing anything out of the way. Quite a deal, indeed.

We're assuming he meant the Fed CA to CAD conversion, of course.

The Klingons have their D6D, the Kzintis have one as well.

This year communique is doing requested ships. We did the Fed in January, so they won't get another communique ship until 2016.

On the subject of Special Sensors, though (Rule 5S), I note that the Special Sensors do not confer extra drone control channels. IIRC, Special Sensors in SFB *do* confer extra drone control, but apparently not in FC.

So the Agincourt would need the named ship exception to the standard 6-drone control rating, then, in order to be able to control more. The Special Sensors will be of no help in that regard.....

That said, the Klingon D6D featured in the Communique can control 12 drones; can we assume that the Fed drone cruiser can do that too?

EDIT: Fixed my post.

The CAD has double drone control in SFB, so it will have it in FC.

Thank you very much for answering my question about double drone control way up in the thread.
