Maghadim Hives

Post by Darkwing »

I posted some pictures of my scratchbuilt Maghadim ships under the Darkwing's Minis thread, but since there was no thread for Mag-Hive ships, I thought there ought to be one. Here are a few shots of my destroyers and heavy cruisers.

Good to see the Lesser Magellanic Cloud make its debut on the tabletop!

Have you considered doing any other ships from the Maghadim fleet?

I was thinking that, for the "small" collar used on the C and HDD, it migth be an idea to have the port and starboard nacelles angle up, instead of down; to help give the fleet a bit more variety overall.

Plus, since you have the BC's large collar done already, all you'd need is to work out the FF's hull pieces in order to put together a CL.

Oh, and one photo request; if you have any Andromedan minis on hand, could you be able to show how they look when lined up against your newly-hatched Maghadim force?

I have indeed been working out sizes for the FFs and CLs. Once I get them worked out, they will join the fleet. That is a good idea about turning the nacelles up for the BC. I hadn't thought of that, but I see myself experimenting with that when I get the basics worked out.

As for the photo request...here you go!

Oh, to be clear, I meant the C (Cruiser); the DD hull with the small collar. (The BC is the DD with the large collar, which you already have set up).

Although, of course, whichever way "up" or "down" the small and large collars go would also spill over to the CL and HDD.

Thank you kindly.

(Hopefully, I'll get the chance to do something constructive with those WIP LMC rules; it would be neat to see how that matchup would work out in a FC context.)

As promised/threatened, there are more Maghadim ships on the workbench.

This batch includes at least one example of each ship class listed in Module C5, except for the AuxCV.

Work is progressing on the new armada, but I need to quickly apologize to Nerroth...

The picture I was using as a reference to make the cruiser turned out to be the battlecruiser.

As a result, my ships are not going to look exactly right. Sorry about that. I literally found that out as the ships' primer was drying. So...be warned: these will look a little different from your vision of them.

A last look at a couple of these before they hit the paint shop.

I have nicknamed one of these Optimus Prime. One of them reminds me of Stewie Griffin.

Finally! The mighty Maghadim fleet is complete.

Again I need to apologize. Some of these will not be accurate. I was basing my minis on the picture on the cover of Module C5, but thinking that the BC was the CA. Most of my ships are going to look wrong, but that's life.

Also, I was not able to get the paint on the collars to crackle like I had managed on my first two cruisers.

With that said, here are the ships ready for combat.

First up, the Battlecruisers, posed with a Fed BC and a C7 for size comparison. As suggested, the engine pods are turned upward on the BC.

The Maghadim CVA is one of the most powerful ships in the LMC. Here it is along with an escort frigate and a heavy destroyer escort. Along with the Mags, there is a Klingon C8V. The size difference is because the Maghadim carrier us based on the destroyer/heavy cruiser rather than the dreadnoughts of the Alpha Quadrant.

Image

When you have to move a lot of stuff, you call the transports. Here we have two tugs and two destroyer transports. One of each has a cargo pod attached.

Image

The CVS is also based on the cruiser, so it looks more correct when viewed with Alpha CVSs. Here is the Fed CVS Nimitz and her DDE with a similar Maghadim group. (Though the Mag escort is a frigate.)

Image

A mixed bag of classes. At the front we have a destroyer carrier (DV) with a scout carrier behind it. In the middle of the front row is a light cruiser. At the far back is a CVL.

Image

More ships of various classes. Center front is a heavy destroyer. To the left is a frigate and to the right is a frigate scout. Directly behind the HDD is a hybrid carrier (with the bay doors visible above the engine pods). The ship to the left of that, with the hanging engines is the heavy destroyer escort.

And some more scouts. That's a heavy destroyer scout up front, with a survey vessel at the rear. While not a scout, the Fed DD is the same size as the Fed scout.

Image

I also made two auxiliary carriers from Shapeways light freighters. I patched and filled the stand holes and drilled a new one on the "top." Upside down they look like carriers and sort of match the silhouette on the SSD. Somehow I forgot to snap pictures of them. Sorry about that.
