Demos and Shapeways

I was thinking of joining whatever demo team ADB has going for it right now and running some demonstrations of ACTA:SF!

The only problem I see with that now is that with Shapeways 3D-printing most of the ships now, this leaves retailers out in the cold, as miniature game sales are predicated by selling miniatures. Is that indeed the case, or am I wrong?

Thanks

It's going to take years to convert the entire catalog into digital models. Most of the ships still exist in metal and will likely be sold in metal until the molds wear out. (Not speaking for ADB, just comparing what they sell on the catalog and what the sculptors have been encourage to upload.)

From what I've seen, many of the Shapeways designs so far are ships that don't have decent metal versions, and many of them are niche designs that are never going to sell enough copies to ever be worth making a mold for.

(For me personally, I don't have any hobby retailers within driving distance that stock the miniatures I need or are even willing to order them for me. I was forced year ago into either buying fleets via mail order or making my own.)

What Steve Z said is a good summary. We have hundreds of metal ships and they aren't going away for years.
