On the BBS it was mentioned that there will be no follow up product for this. With that in mind, will the rulebook contains rules/guidelines for converting units to the system? That way if future ships are released, players can convert those new units into VBAM stats to be used in the quick battle ...

Have they ever published a draft or detailed preview of Federation Admiral? Or are there any popular, published homebrew systems that capture some of that campaign flavor?

Well as Federation Admiral is based on Victory by Any Means, I imagine that the book must be similar to existing VBAM ...

It's been slipping down the list for the last 5-6 years with no signs of getting a foothold. Even when "Much of that work has been done" on the book, it's bumped in favour of other books starting seemingly from a much less complete state.

Ah. Well, either way. It seems to me that either fighters or gunboats would fit fine.
If gunboats are just small ships, then adding them doesn't seem like a problem.
If fighters are already in the game (stingers) then adding more doesn't seem like a problem either.
