Thanks for all the advice. I'm looking forward to getting into SFB.

I have tried ACTA, but it's not really what I want. For me it's not much different than other light miniatures games out there. Not to say it's bad, of course.

The very things that put some people off of SFB are beginning to ...

Taking the plunge

I used to play FedCom fairly regularly, and I've dabbled in Starmada and ACTA. But a friend's enthusiasm has convinced me to "go for it", and I'm trying to learn SFB. So far I am just going through the Cadet manual, mucking about. My friend is about to move fairly close to where I live, so soon we ...

I would definitely say that within 8 or at range 17 is the optimal firing position for drones. Though your opponent may not necessarily allow you to get where you want!

I'm a bit timid about disagreeing with the game designer (!), but if I were a Kzinti admiral I don't think I'd willingly close ...

Excellent! KA is another fine way to experience the SFU. Anybody who hasn't tried it really ought to do so.

Klingon Armada AAR posted

A while back I talked about a battle a friend and I played where the Klingons (me) assaulted a Federation Battle Station and its defenders. The battle was played with 16 ships plus the station and was completed in less than 3 hours.

I posted the AAR over on Boardgame Geek to let those folks know ...

Earlier today I got to play a big game of Klingon Armada. It was a two player game... as the Klingons I was assaulting a Federation Battle Station at the start of the Klingon invasion.

I commanded a strike force of 10 ships led by the IKV Kahless the Unforgettable, a C8. My opponent commanded a ...

Requete: Thanks for the reply. I think I understand it a lot better now.

Another question, if I may...

About how many hexes do typical cruisers move per turn? I think I remember somewhere seeing that ships are given a movement allowance. I guess that would totally change things from Federation ...

I've never played Starmada, but have been curious about it for a long time.

For those who are experienced (even one game!), would 1 on 1 duels be possible and/or desirable with Klingon Armada?

In general I would say that a 1 on 1 duel is a suboptimal use for the system (after all, duels and ...

I played my first game of this a few days ago. I really enjoyed it. I got to run 2 Fed CAs and a CC against 3 D7s handled by a more experienced opponent. We played the game in around an hour, including me learning the rules from zero.

Both of us ended up making mistakes in allocating fire (overkill ...

Re: HR

m1a1dat, I like your avatar.

If your M1A1 takes a hit on the turret and you have reinforced armor that negates the damage, but is itself blown away, then you get hit in the exact same location, are you going to apply that damage somewhere else? Stupid thinking, uh? The same thinking can be ...

I think whichever player rolls hotter will win no matter which side it is. At least that's always the way it seems to go whenever I play.

Heh. Rolling dice is for chumps. Corner 'em, close to Range 1 and let 'em have it. Photons and ESGs are auto hits, and Ph-Gs can't ever do too badly at that ...

I'm sure it also partly depends on the type of ships you're flying. Lyrans would suffer with small ships because they cannot both alpha the same shield on the same impulse. Feds suffer because "close and hose" is less viable.

On the other hand, more 'dancerly' ships like Klin would probably do fine ...

My money is on the big ship as well, particularly if it has good "crunch" potential.

If a pair of small ships want to equal the firepower of a big ship, they probably (unless they're Hydran HB ships) need to be firing on the same shield. If one takes a bunch of power hits, it will have trouble ...

Well, the Jindarians do have interesting roles to play...

...outside of the Alpha Octant.

That raises an interesting issue for me.

I wouldn't mind Jindarians in FedCom, and I thought Nerroth's long post above ("Billy Mays here! Jindarians are now just $19.95 plus shipping and handling. But ...
