Scoutdad's at it again.
While doing spring cleaning, I ran across a DIY plastic Christmas ornament that belongs to ScoutMom, or at least it did...
As soon as I saw it, I thought... whoa, that would make a cool ESG field. I only managed to cut out the base opening tonight and prep / prime the War Cruiser mini, but here's a preview:
It's still in the very crude, preliminary stages - but I've got plans.
The ship will of course receive a typical "Cat Camo" paint job. I'm no sure what to attempt yet, so I am open to suggestions...although I'm leaning towards an ocelot, since I haven't done one of those yet.
I have some transparent green and transparent yellow paint that I will apply to the inside of the sphere before final assembly. _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

Am I the only one who looks at that and can't help but say "Byoing!".
Very cool custom tweak Tony. It's only going to look cooler painted.
Too bad you won't have ones for different radii though _________________

I've already thought of that. The Christmas globes are available in 3 sizes that will work...
That is the smallest. As X-mas gets closer and they hit the stores agsain, I will buy a couple of each size and prep them for use as ESG's. The dome halves snap together and the mini goes in from the inside. That means in a game, you can swap out ESGs as needed. That was a key aspect in deciding to do this in the first place.
I only have a limited number of miniatures available and can tie one of them up in a permanent ESG field. _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

Whoa, wait a minute! Scoutdad has a limited number of minis?? Oh man, we're in trouble.
Seriously though, it's a great idea, and the swapping ability is awesome. I can't wait to see it finished. _________________ O.G. OPTIMUS

Well, it may seem like a lot, but I only have 1 CA in Foremost colors, and one in Red Claw, and one in Apex, and one in Dark Star, and one in Pelt Hunters, and one in Night Roar...
If I don't go with interchangable ESG's, then who gets the protection? Should I have 4 CA's in each fleet color (1 at each radius, and one with no sphere) permanently encased in acylic resin? While I'm sure SVC would love to sell those to me... my wife would probably have some choice words to say and I'd never have time to paint them all... _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

Good idea Scoutdad!
I made an esg field using "E-Z Water"resin and it took a while to get it right becuse I had to cut a hole for the base. I used a pot-pie pan for the mold, but I should have made a rubber mold instead.

I got the insperation from your post on Tholian webs awhile back. When I was looking at your webs on your site I saw all of your Lyran ships.
I like your idea of using the ornament better.
I would suggest soaking your esg field it in something that would stain it a light color (tomato sauce? or something similar) , and then applying glitter.
Honey, when are we going to have spaghetti again? |

Looks great Tony:-) But it looks like it wouldn't be very suitable for hexless play.
We use pipe-cleaners of varying colors for things (yellow means an ECM drone, orange an ECP, black is cloaked, pink EM, etc.). I made some straight ESG ones that clip around the base shaft and go out to range 3, 2, 1, or 0. The ESG ones look like Christmas garland and come in green, red, gold, and silver respectively. Since they are straight, we can pivot them around so we can move the mini with the turn gauges. _________________ One of the guys that sculpts the minis (Starline 2400) |

Actually, the way the sphere sits on teh base... the lower edge of the base is still accesseble. I did this to enable the use of turn gauges. You can place the sphere on the mini... and then use a turn gauge to turn the mini.
Although the sphere would certianly interfere with another mini closing in on the Lyran ship... _________________ Commander, Battlegroup Murfreesboro

If you go to your local Tap Plastics (or other type of store) they sell clear acrylic circles in various sizes you could use for ESG templates. You would need to paint them since they're in clear only. |

Hey, these might work pretty well of the Adastra Game's AV:T or SITS. Too bad they're an ocean away. Wonder what Ken would say.... _________________ I'm wise enough to know that I don't know half as much as I think I know, you know? |
