Star Fleet Battles Advanced Missions SSD Book Available from Multiple Sources
"Captain, congratulations. You have brought your ship through its basic tour. Now we have an advanced mission for you. Good luck!"
Newly updated in 2014, the Star Fleet Battles Advanced Missions SSD Book is now available in print and as an e-book. As an e-book, you now have a choice of the original black-and-white SSDs or the new color ones. This 144-page book includes such classic ships as the Federation galactic survey cruiser, Klingon D7C command cruiser and B10 battleship, Romulan King Eagle command cruiser, Kzinti drone frigate, Gorn dreadnought, Tholian dreadnought and TK5 destroyer, and Orion Battle Raider. It also has SSDs for a monitor and a fleet repair dock as well as ground-based defenses. The Advanced Missions SSD Book does require the SFB rulebook to fully utilize the SSDs.

Some people have wanted to know what changed in the 2014 SFB Advanced Missions SSD book. Here is an answer from Steven Petrick.
All of the shuttle tracks were updated for "advanced shuttles."
All of the Gorn ships got plasma carronade tables if they were eligible for that refit.
All plasma-armed ships got the sabot refit if they were eligible for it.
All of the fighter data tables were updated to the most modern fighter used by that empire and including the BPV line. (This did mean that the D6V and CVT no longer have Z-1 fighters on their SSDs so their shuttle bays show all drone-armed fighters).
All ships got their "Crawford table."
All ships go the new status on refit bars that includes the year of the refit. (Not mech-link refits or partial-X refits, as these are never universal for the empires in this product.)
The Klingon D7L and Romulan KRC had their refits organized to be standard rather than having text saying "without this refit, reduce the BPV by X points."
Various explanatory notes for things were added, e.g, a note that says what the plasma sabot refit is and where to find the rule for it since it is not in Basic Set or Advanced Missions.
All tugs were converted to the new Basic Set standard, that is unless the tug and pod combination has a specific listing on the Master Ship Chart, such as Klingon CVT and Klingon BT, they data table reflects the tug and the pods have their own data table. The SSD allows the pods to be dropped (crossed off of the tug's SSD basically) and operate the tug without the pods or after picking up pods of different weights so you do not have to transfer the data of any damage the tug has sustained to that point, or drones it has launched, PPTs it has used, boarding parties or T-bombs or shuttles or what not to a new SSD to continue the game. If the tug has a specific listing on the MSC, that is the data that appears in the ship data table on the SSD, but the SSD is still organized to allow the pods to be dropped in mid battle and other pods picked up.
If there was any errata known to affect a given SSD, it was incorporated. _________________ Business Manager/RPG Line Editor

I've been waiting for this to be released so I could get the advanced missions module. Which I will probably get in a month or so. How much would postage to New Zealand be for that module?
Cheers

Hi Jean,
Is there an example somewhere of what a colour SSD looks like? _________________ Nothing is quite as persuasive as a disruptor pistol on slow burn and a rotisserie...... |

Expansion #2 of Star Fleet Battles, Designer's Edition Now Available
Return to the early days of Star Fleet Battles. This is the second expansion to the Designer's Edition. Rules were still being tweaked and corrected (some being made at the last minute with a ballpoint pen!), new ships and rules were being added, and new scenarios were being written.
The second expansion is available as an ebook from
Warehouse 23: http://www.warehouse23.com/products/star-fleet-battles-designers-edition-expansion-number-2
DriveThru RPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/134796/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition-Expansion-2
Wargame Vault: http://www.wargamevault.com/product/134796/Star-Fleet-Battles-Designers-Edition-Expansion-2
As with Expansion #1, the book started with a few pages (19?!?) of updates (the dreaded errata were spreading like a fungus). These updates were not just corrections and tweaks to older rules, but included some entirely new rules and even entirely new concepts, such as the Impulse Activity Segment, emergency life support, half-size phaser capacitors, energizing phasers, shield costs were different for ships of different sizes, a limit on how far away you could control drones, limits on the number of probes armed in one turn, maximum phaser ranges (originally, this range was infinite), effective vs. true range, pseudo-plasma torpedoes, Klingon drone launch limits, fighters and shuttles no longer having to go their maximum speed all the time, dropping a pod as a really big wild weasel, skeleton crews, boarding parties deactivating wild weasels or suicide shuttles, hit-and-run raids to kidnap specific individuals from a ship, revised ship destruction force calculations (a concept that was totally crazy), major changes to cloaking including that chart to calculate if you can spot a cloaked ship (including a correction factor added to the rulebook via Steve Cole's ball point pen at the last second), weapons arming, pursuit plotting, carrier storage, landing shuttles on planets, and much more.
Actual new rules began on page 20 with the hellbore, fast drones, probe drones, expanding sphere generators, improved Klingon drone racks, multi-warhead drones, scatter-packs, chaff, identifying drones, firing modifications at small targets, scout functions, sideslip maneuvers, erratic maneuvering, nimble ships, booster packs (then called Dash Pods) for fighters and gunboats, crew quality, Legendary Officers, and fighter pilot quality (such as aces).
A whole new kind of unit appeared: pseudo-fighters! (SVC didn't understand what "pseudo" meant and later changed this to Fast Patrol ships and later still to gunboats.)
The Federation got its huge carrier, plus fighter shuttles, attack shuttles, SWAC shuttles, destroyer escorts, escort cruisers, the galactic survey cruiser, and the improved dreadnought.
Klingons got the B10 battleship, E3 Escort, G2 police boat, and F5S scout.
Hydrans got the Paladin, scout, Hunter, Dragoon, Knight, and Cuirassier.
Kzintis got the space control ship, drone frigate, fleet tug, and scout.
Lyrans appeared with the Tiger, Panther, Leopard, and Cheetah.
Gorns got their dreadnought. Orions got the Slaver, light carrier, and Light Raider.
(There was also the curious drug runner, which turned out later to just be a Light Raider stashing illegal drugs in the plasma-F chambers to keep them fresh.)
The new Carrier Group Campaign appeared, as did the Piracy Patrol Mini-Campaign and the Carrier Duel Mini Campaign.
New scenarios included Fighter Strike, Pseudo-Fighter Flotilla, The Mind Monster, The Trojan Shuttle, Tomcat Terror vs. Gunboat Diplomacy, The Cutlass Episode, Operation Cavalry, and the hilarious Tomcats over Leebyahh.

Star Fleet Battles Designer's Edition, Expansion #3 Now Available from Multiple Sources
Be of stout heart and good cheer, for yet another frontier looms ahead of us.
The success of Expansion #2 had produced a demand for more Star Fleet Battles products. As Steve Cole and his new company (Amarillo Design Bureau) needed income, they were only too happy to do another product, later in 1982. This expansion focused on new ships (with 86 new designs including war cruisers and PF tenders), but included two new empires (Andromedans and WYNs).
As with the two previous expansions, this began with a few (10?!?) pages of updates to previous rules, including an updated Sequence of Play, Fractional Accounting (you no longer had to spend energy in complete points), the plasma shotgun (which should have been a new rule, not buried in the errata), balcony and track landing systems, a true cloaking device cost chart, segmented turn plotting (the last attempt to make plotted movement work), shuttle chain reactions, new rules for firing weapons through an atmosphere, advantage options, and quick reverses.
New rules included enveloping plasma torpedoes, aegis fire control, the WYN Radiation Zone, ECM drones, changing speed in mid-turn, PF tenders, war cruisers, complete mine rules, new Federation fighters (F18 and F16), minesweepers, carrier pods, Lyran trimarans, Romulan modular ships, Free Traders, armed priority transports, Federation Express couriers, and more.
New scenarios included Space Dragons, Minesweeping, PF Pickup, Incident on the WYN Border, Probing the WYN Cluster, Fi-Con Fiasco, Trojan Shuttle II, and The WYN and the Lion.
Admiral Kosnett's War, a new campaign, was included.
Background for the WYNs and Andromedans was provided.
The game, for the first time, included a Master Ship Chart, which was so complex that the typesetter refused to format it and Task Force had to use the version from Steve Cole's typewriter!
This PDF has been created by scanning the best copy available.
Expansion #3 is now available from these sources:
