Do you have a favorite race and/or ship? Something that you fly particularly well or just find yourself using more?

I like the Fed CA of course, and there is something about the Fed DD that I like as well. But if I was to choose just one...well, it would have to be the Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser.

How about you...

The Federation NCL.

I still love that little ship, even with its silly weaknesses. Its disadvantages are having only two batteries, a 4-6 breakdown rating, and only one drone rack. However, its advantages! It has 28 points of warp power and another 4 impulse. It can charge normal loads or hold overloads and (if phaser capacitors are full) run at speed 30. It is the ship every Fed wants, even if they don't know it.

Two caveats: The NCA is much more robust, and eliminates all of the NCL's weaknesses. However, it is bigger and costs more. (Plus, the NCA is ugly. Different sized warp engines always sets me on edge ...) The CS is a flat out superior ship. In fact, it borders on true munchkin. It is priced similar to the NCA. Because of the costs, I will usually still take the NCL as the price break outweighs eliminating weaknesses for me.

So, my favorite ship is the NCL. It was on the first battle I played, and has remained so since then.

Mike,

Since you're mentioning the Fed new cruisers, how do you find the NCF and NLF?

I have tried extremely hard to keep my prejudices off of this board. So, answering this will be a bit of a challenge. Here goes ...

I am not a big fan of fast ships. I think that the Fed fast ships, with their spade-shaped primary hulls (I figure I can't call them 'saucers') look pretty cool. But I tend not to use them. Particularly for the Feds, where it is just another variant that dumps photons for something else. Power, in this case. (Yes, I know they get more phasers, too. But the exchange is primarily about power.) I have no problem with the original fast ships, but I really am not a fan of making 'fast' variants of every hull type in the game. However, since I am definitely a minority in this, I try to just ignore the whole issue in general.

So, I really don't like the NLF. I don't like it in principle, and I don't like it in action. My problem with the NLF is that the NCL already has a great power curve. The NCL is one of the few Federation ships that has the power to use its photons effectively, and power the rest of its systems. Why in the world would I get rid of half the photons to get even more power? That is trading what I need (ability to deliver damage) for something I don't (even more power with less to use it on). Quite simply, the ship makes absolutely no sense to me.

Now, as I initially said, while I am not a big fast ship proponent, I do not mind the CF. It actually can use the excess power, even with the lost of half its photons. So, I don't mind it. I put the NCF in the same boat as the CF. It is a logical extension of the idea, and as NCA variants replace CA variants, it only makes sense that an NCF would be developed.

Also with the NCF, it actually fixes a problem I have with the NCA: its engines are all the same. It looses its "tinker toy" appearance, and becomes much more aesthetic than its other NCA brethren. Of all the Federation fast ships, this is the one that I aesthetically like best.

I think the NCF looks great too, particularly if you compare the Starline moni of it to many of its counterparts.

When it comes to the NLF, there is the matter of the use it may have strategically - which SFB ships would be beholden to as much as they would in terms of how they might handle in a given scenario. Having that fast ship moniker might not matter in terms of playing on the tabletop...

..but then, if you're in a campaign in which ship availability (or the location of a given battle) is partly influenced by what strategic speeds your ships can travel at, the NLF may have the advantage.

Plus, there's the option (well, workaround) available for repping an NLF on the tabletop; simply use the main hull of the NCF and not attach the third engine.

Which brings me to a point I wasn't too sure about - can a Fed player in a campaign (F&E or otherwise) upgrade an NLF to an NCF?

I personally always liked the Hydrans, ships with their fighters. The 'Chieftan' class ships were my preference.

However, when the Omega races came out I really liked the Iridani with their modular (half-pod sized) design. I would like to see that they get more development and more of a pod selection choice some time in the future. Most of the current Omega ships would equate to Alpha pre-war ships. What I like most about Omega is the variety in tech each race has.

Man, this is hard. I have different preferences in different size classes.

Favorite DN: Toss up...Klingon C8K or Fed DNG
Favorite BCH: Fed BCF, followed closely by the Klingon C7A
Favorite CA/CC: Hydran Dragoon or Iroquois (IRQ is underpriced a bit, but even with a higher BPV I'd love it)...The D7C is a close second, and there is nothing quite so enjoyable as a Fed CB
Favorite CW: D5K (even if you jacked the price up by 6-10 BPV, I'd still love it)... the WYN CW and Fed NCL are close seconds
Favorite DD/DW: Almost impossible to choose... Fed DDs (all of them), Hydran KN, Lyran DW, Kzinti DD, Tholian DD, Rom BH, Gorn BDD...can you tell I want to command a DD in real life? Cool
Favorite FF: Easy...Fed FFG. WYN FF is a close second, but that thing is darn near a light DD.

I should note that my list is more to do with background preferences, rather than on-table use.

My favourite factions, background-wise, would be the ISC (in the Alpha Octant), a toss-up between the FRA, Iridani and Maesrons (in Omega), the Baduvai Imperium (in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud) and.. we'll see!

In terms of ships, it's hard to say.

If I were an Iridani captain, I might not mind flying a Clipper with a flex or survey module - or I might plump for my own Man-O-War battleship!

With the ISC, if they ever make an SRX, I might like one of those. The BBL will do fine in the meantime, though!

For the Aurorans, the prospect of flying the fabled Throne of Ozymondas itself is tempting, though I might like to try one of their regular fleet options, like the BC. (If/when more data is published about what Alpha drop-ins they also fly, that could be interesting.)

Not sure which Baduvai ship I'd like to fly most, though.

Also, I wouldn't toss aside the offer of a Fed GSX - not least if it happened to be one called Sakharov...

Any of the Romulan firehawk series ships. Actually I LOVE the Seahawk even more. But plasma empires frost my cupcake if you know what I mean.

I love the Seahawk too . . . such a great little ship for its size.

My favorite race is the Kzintis. Usually lots of different tactics you can apply.

Favorite ships:
Kzinti MCC: I discovered this ship in the old Commander's Edition, when each warp engine had 1 more box (3 more warp power total). It was a beast. I still like it a lot.

Kzinti DD: Great 'older' ship.

Kzinti SDF: Yeah, so the thing pretty much always gets targeted and destroyed in any game I've ever used it in. But 6 drone racks, double drone control AND sensors...

Kzinti SSCS: Never got to play with it, but it's on my list...

Non Kzinti favorite ship:

Hydran Apache: Fun ship to fly. Hellbores, fusions and gatlings (and no pesky fighters) with a great power curve.

Honorable Mention:

Fed CA: Still the most beautiful starship ever made.

The U.S.S. Mars. You have to remember I'm from the Crisis on Infinate Earths where what's conjectural is real. Including the D57- Friguiser! LOL!

Having played a number of years on the tournament circuit, I finally settled on the Gorn CA. The Fed photons missed too often and the Gorn weapon arcs always let me fight from behind more shields. Plus plasmas are at their best on a closed map.

For shear joy of flying though I don't think I've ever had more fun outside of a Klingon F5.

I like the old Federation CL (Texas Class). I have no idea why, but I have always loved that ship. It is just a rugged platform (with that old sub-light armor) that was used for all kinds of variants.

Not too small, but not too big. It seemd like where in TOS, the Fed CA was the workhorse of the fleet. In the SFU, before the general war, the CL was the workhorse.

Now that my son plays FC with me (at about the age I started playing SFB), he likes the Federation, so I am playing more Klingon ships. I like the little F5's. I like getting a group of 3 of them and seeing what I can do to bigger ships.
