I'm no Adam Turner or Ted Giebel, but I've done some SFU art too.
Here's a drawing of the classic Federation Destroyer:

Here's my 3D model of the (old, square-engine, never-happened) Federation Frigate:

Here's the proposal page for Leanna's Fighting Starships that had orthographic views of that model and some flavor text (560k Adobe Acrobat file). _________________

Great stuff Will. I like the DD. And I think I mentioned elsewhere that I really like the page you did or Leanna's Fighting Starships. _________________ O.G. OPTIMUS

That DD is very nice indeed, I sometimes with I could draw like that! I've always liked the Fed DD, and you've captured it really well in that picture. |

Even though it's not 'canon' anymore, I've always liked the square-engine Fed Frigate design. In fact, I think you've made the overall design look very cool indeed. Bravo! _________________ The innocent shall suffer...BIG TIME. |

When I came back to the SFU after a 12 year gap, the changes to the Fed FF mini and the elimination of the old Fed CV(o) design were two things I had to get my head wrapped around. I'd spent many an hour staring at the old minis... _________________

I would like to say that I like your art aswell. In fact, I kinda like that design of the Frigate with square/rectangle engines more then the standard tube like engines we see with Federation ships. |

Thanks for the kind words.
The FF minis with the "square" engines still turn up on eBay from time to time (the old multi-piece Starline 2200 version). I traded the two I had away several months ago. _________________

Here's a ditty from my sketchbook, from sometime in 1987.
It's a partial storyboard for an abandoned animation sequence of a D-7 getting the worst end of a fight with a Fed CA. _________________

Nice. Well... you're better at drawing than me! I can paint and stuff, but never could sketch quite like that. |

I've got one of the square engined FF figures that I painted up to use as an FFX. |

Heh. I added that image as a re-direct to get some people to stop stealing bandwidth from my site (they were leaching some music equipment logos, etc.). It looks like I forgot to add this site to my "whitelist", so I've made myself a "loser".
Big L on my forehead until I can get home and fix this.
[EDIT 12/16/08: All fixed (although it never should have broke in the first place)]. _________________

So, over in the minis threads, the subject of the Federation LTT (Light Tactical Transport, a "light" tug built on the NCL hull) mini that Tony Thomas is working on came up.
In the flow of that conversation, the subject of an LTT carrying a fighter "carrier" pod was raised as an issue, if the pod is carried close to the hull (no "neck" on the LTT) and if the LTT has the usual dangling sensor dish.
I give you the results of those posts (a cautionary tale) [along with a really quickly sketched drawing]...
Dal Downing -
I would hate to be the Pilot assigned to a LTT with a CVL Pod taking off out the front of that Pod might make you do a Wiley E Coyote into the back of the Sensor Dish...
Tony Thomas -
I can see the CAG now:
"A'ight youse guys... Remember the clever formation launches we practiced back at Starbase 3? Fuhgedaboudit! Do youse see that big round shiny thing out in front of the hatch? Well, flying into that would not be a good thing... so's here what we gonna do...
Odd numbered flights... launch in sequence and break left once you're outta the bay.
Even numbered flights... break to you'se udder left!
Anybody that screws this up had better hope the crash kills you before I do!
Then they launch...
One: "I'm clear and breaking left - mark!"
Two: I'm out - break right!"
Three: "uhhhh....", crunch!
"This is CIC to Flight Control. CIC to Flight! We seem to have lost all sensor reception. Can you have one of the CAP see it there's anything visually wrong with the Sensor dish?"
Will McCammon -
"Flight, Ghostrider10. Roger your request for an eyeball on the LTT's dish... wait one..."
[sounds of muffled laughter]
"Uh, Flight... I can confirm that the dish is not, repeat NOT there, but F-18 side-number 003 is.
You might want to get an admin shuttle out there before he breaks loose and takes the rest of the sensor post with him back into the shuttlebay..."
[additional sounds of laughter].
Dal Downing -
"What was that side-number Ghostrider10? Over."
"Flight, Ghostrider10. CAG, that side-number was zero zero three."
"CAG to Hornet Zero Zero Three. Coyote, are you listening?"
"Yes Pappy, I can hear you."
"Son, do you know what your next flight assignment is going to be?"
"Its going to involve rubber dog doodoo isn't it sir..." _________________
