One Question please. May a cloaked romulan travel at speed 16+1 by accelerating or must a cloaked romulan stay at speed 16?

They can move 16+, but they would need to cancel one move unless they want to void the cloak.

One of the reasons to do that would be so you can have an extra subpulse to choose when you would move your ship tactically. Am I right on that? Seems I read it somewhere.

Moving 16+1 voids the cloak.

If you move only 1 or 2 hexes in an impluse the cloak is fine.

If for ANY reason (baseline speed, acceleration, etc) you move 3 or 4 hexes in an impulse your cloak is voided.

Marcus, you can have a baseline speed of 16, accelerate, and then decelerate on one of the sub-pulses and move only two hexes. You will be considered to have a speed of 16+1 for most of the impulse, but will not void the cloak.

The answers here all appear to be correct. Terry summed it up best.

What benefit would a move like this give you? Seems like a zero-sum gain.

It is a zero-gain for the turn, but perhaps you need that one extra hex for one phase to open/close a gap to an enemy ship for a momentary tactical advantage.

You would also gain the benefit of a baseline speed of 16+1 for movement precedence purposes - anyone moving at 16 would have to move before your 16+1 move.

You and enemy are in the same hex. He moves speed 16 trying to shadow you. You go speed 16+

Sub pulse 1: no one moves
Sub pulse 2: He is slower so has to move first, that makes it hard to shadow you, as if he moves ahead you can cancel and be behind him, if he stays you can pull away 1 hex. If you decel you still get 2 moves on sub pulse 3 and 4. But you will have to decel for one move anyway or void the cloak.

That is basically the key reason to accel whilst under cloak. It provides some flexibility in WHEN you move compared to the enemy. In some cases it is the difference between surviving or being blown apart.

There are other corner cases - e.g. moving twice on 2 and 3 may mean the incoming seekers can be made to hit another shield.
