Turn 10 (Year 84) End of Turn Report.

Hydrans and Federation: eerily quiet.

Klingons and Lyrans - fighting a Young Space Dragon, and one another.

The Carnivon war drags on. Alliance forces (Kzinti, Imperial, Tholian) capture another three Carnivon Border systems, leaving a single Carnivon Border system defended with a DN and a YDK and YSAM. Tholians have, however, learned how to to use web to establish barriers on the fly from which they can fire from. This does not bode well.

All Carnivon Core systems raided by Tholian and Imperial ships to devastating effect.

Ship losses this turn were minimal, though the Carnivons successfully destroyed an Imperial CA (really a small DN) that got too close to the YDK, and then tried tp esca[e wtih a HET, adnthen triedto attack agains with a second HET.

Carnivon Base losses were as appalling as usual.

News of the second year of war (Year 83) arrives at Lyran, Hydran, Klingon, and Federation capitals in this turn

Turn 11 (Year 85) End of Turn Report.

Hydrans and Federation: still eerily quiet.

Klingons and Lyrans - quiet.

The Carnivon war continues. Alliance forces (Kzinti, Imperial, Tholian) capture Frontier Beta, the last Carnivon Border system, and a YDK intact (though damaged). It was a large battle, some 13-14 Alliance ships vs. the YDK, a missile base, a YSAM, and a Carnivon YFF. The YSAM and missile base were destroyed, but the YDK (barely) and YFF (not at all barely) were captured. The Carnivons are now cut off from outside help, and their Core worlds laid bare to invasion and Home open for Deep Strikes.

Tholians Commerce raids continue, essentially destroying 60% of the Carnivon economy each turn. Carnivon W and Y ships less than Cruiser size are completely ineffective against the Tholian PC, and even the CAs have a difficult time of it (b/c of the Tholian Phaser-1s and excess energy for reinforcement and speed).

The Tholians also encountered a Space Amoeba attempting to consume one of their colonies, and dispatched it in a flurry of probes.

News of the third year of war (Year 84) arrives at Lyran, Hydran, Klingon, and Federation capitals in this turn.

Kzinti, Tholians, and Imperials take three of the five Carnivon Core systems without a fight. Commerce raiding against all five Core systems and the Carnivon Home system leave the Carnivons in dire financial straits as they are not capable of covering the loss in revenue with their remaining budget.

In a last gasp effort, Carnivon agents sabotage an Imperial Cruiser, preventing it from completing its strategic Transfer mission for the turn. But the big event was the Carnivon reinforcements of seven ships (WDN, WCA, YCL, YDD, 3xWDD) to disrupt the Kzinti and Tholian invasion of a fourth Carnivon Core system.

The Kzinti (WCA, 3xWDD) and Tholian (1xPC) could have run for it, but instead they decide to sacrifice this force to bleed the Carnivon fleet. It might indeed have been a Carnivon disaster as the Kzinti lead with 4 3-drone scatterpacks plus 5 drones in the sky once the combat began. Plus the fact that the Kzinti and Tholians could maintain speed 24 and 24+1 and still have power available for their offensive weapons, whereas the Carnivon ships were generally relegated to speed 8 with occasional 8+1 sprints.

Instead, the Kzinti and Tholians divided their forces up into three wings sabre-dance style, each orbiting at about 8-12 hexes from the tight triangular "fortress" of Carnivon ships. This allowed the Carnivons to destroy about 3/4 of the incoming drones in the first wave, and yet still have enough offensive punch to weaken the Kzinti WCA enough that 3 Deathbolts finished her off in short order. The Kzinti then tried a single "swoop in" tactic that resulted in the de-weaponing of two Kzinti WDDs, and substantial (but not lethal) damage to the Tholian PC. The Carnivons lost a single WDD and sustained very minor damage on another and the YDD.

At this point, the Kzinti & Tholian forces choose to run for the stars, and the Carnivons decided to let them go since only the YCL and YDD were fast enough to actually give chase, but were probably did not have the firepower to both defend themselves from Kzinti drones, fire any offensive weapons, and maintain pursuit. So they let them go.

In nearby Kzinti space, the Klingons found a wormhole to the Kzinti, but picked up some intruders in transit. Essentially this was the Intruder Alert! scenario played out on a D3E Survey Cruiser and F3 Frigate escort. The Intruder on the F3 taught the players the rules of the game (they were roleplaying the positions at first) and when they realized that the Intruder was going to take over the F3 AND the crew of the F3 was mutinying, they docked and the evacuated the marines.

Then the Kzinti showed up with a massive fleet (2xYCC 6xYFF), demanding answers. Except that the Klingon subspace radios were not functioning. So while the Kzinti prepared to blow the non-responsive Klingons out of the sky, the Klingons figured out how to build analyzers and traps, but the dice were not good to them. Every encounter between Klingon Marines and the Intruder led to the marine being killed and the Intruder destroying the system. Every time the Trap was triggered, it tended to fail to capture the Intruder, cloning it into a second intruder instead.

The F3 then became active all of a sudden and charge the Kzinti line, knocking a shield down on a YFF and beaming over another intruder. The Kzinti responded by activating a scatterpack and atomizing the F3. The Kzinti immediately captured the intruders. No problem.

Back on the D3, the situation was becoming dire. All SCTY stations had been lost, weapons lost, almost all power lost, and about 2/3 of the Marines lost, and the intruders had multiplied from 2 to 6. The players then decided to self-destruct, which meant repairing a Bridge and a power box of some sort. That failed when the Intruders eliminated the last damage control team.

Fortunately,m the Kzinti had figured out the problem, and swept in and beamed off the remaining crew and three of the intruders, and then atomized the D3E with drones. TO much cheering and laughter, the Kzinti Marines immediately captured all three Intruders with no difficulty at all. Not a good day to be a Klingon.

Finally, a young Space dragon that the Lyrans and Klingons had been luring back and forth into each others territory struck at a Lyran planet. The Lyrans scrambled to get together a very strong force: 1xYCA, 3xWCA, and dispatched them to deal with the dragon. I had expected some losses, but the Lyrans managed to slay the dragon in a single (humungous) volley.

A short turn, but an eventful and enjoyable one.

For those watching at home, the Early Years Campaign is still putting along.

We are entering turn 17 (Year 91). The Carnivon Hordes have been demolished and absorbed by the Kzinti, Imperial COnfederation of Planets, and the Tholians. Adding insult to injury is the Carnivon Homeworld has been conquered by the Tholians, who are even now researching enslavement techniques to build Carnivon Y-class ships with - you guessed it - Command modules. Oh my.

Also, the Klingons have invaded the Romulans, and found out that when you use PV as a system of economy, the Romulans can build 5x the number of cruisers that you can. Oh, its a crappy fleet, being only sublight and armed with warp-targeted lasers and Romulan Masks, but its a mammoth fleet - some 90 ships in size (compared to the Klingon 20, and average empire size of 30-40 ships).

With the mapless system, the Romulans have swamped the entire Klingon Border region, and are besieging their last Border world - where the ENTIRE Klingon fleet is (sort of) desperately holding on. That battle will be Sunday (3 D4s, 1 D3, 2 T4s, 3 F4s, 4 F3s, YDK, YSAM vs. 5x Romulan WVL, 6x WKB, 6x WWB).

Biggest battle we will have done to date, and one I expect the Klinks to win easily, but not without losses. That's 17 Plasma-Rs potentially launching on Turn 2, and its going to hurt.

Otherwise, the Kzinti, Imperials, and Tholians are re-organizing and rebuilding. The Hydrans and Lyrans are deathly quiet, and the Federation has still not decided if it Serves Galactic Peace, or will demand that the Galaxy to Serve It.

We shall see!
