Its been years since I played SFB, so I had to dig out the old rules and refresh my memory as to what shock was all about. I was surprised to see that it was basically the same mechanic as breakdowns... that got me thinking.

If a failed HET in ACTA is impulse crits - then it would be easy to do shock as well.

So for all those ships that suffer shock, most notably maulers - I think they could have a weapon trait called "Shock #". When a weapon like this is fired, you have to make a CQC - if failed you suffer a number of impulse crits equal to the # of the shock.

I realize that in SFB you actually totaled up shock over turns - it wasn't instant - however in SFB you also had a bonus to your first HET (or two), while in ACTA its far less reliable (but no book keeping). So I figured the insta crit with Shock was also fitting.

If you want to add shock for maulers you should keep it simple. Jet say that when a condition occurs that would result in shock just give the unit 5 automatic critical hits one in each location which would 5 damage points + the bonus damage hits from the table.

Before anyone says that's to harsh remember you could use the all hands on deck to attempt to repair all 5 critical locations.

Why would five critical hits = five damage points?

Because a critical "hit" counts as a solid hit (1 Damage) and then in addition you roll on the System Table. I said ignore the system roll and just give everything an increase of 1 critcal score.

And before you ask failing a HET states you simply advance the critical score by one per each additional 45 Degree Turn attempted. So in that case it is not a hit per se.

Just wanted to make sure you're not adding the "Critical Score" as part of extra damage, based on the bad example on page 8.
