Star Fleet Universe News

Captain's Log #36, Line of Battle, and Border Box #6 shipped on schedule on the 14th of January. Work is proceeding on February's Federation Commander: Briefing #1 as well as Squadron Boxes #16, #17, and #18. We have decided to reschedule Prime Directive d20Modern for 17 March in order to give the new Editing-Layout team (Jean Sexton and Mike Sparks) time to work through some issues with the files.

Our project to build a new corporate headquarters continues to move on. We now own the land and are working with an architect to finalize the designs. View regular updates on this project.

Our combined and reorganized website, www.StarFleetGames.com, continues to grow and improve. You are welcome to send us your requests, comments, and suggestions.

We are looking for a few good Star Fleet Ambassadors! Our marketing director can't be everywhere and that's where you come in! Do you go to gaming forums like Board Game Geek, RPG Net, or The Miniatures Page? Then WE NEED YOU! To get complete details of the Ambassador program, please see the Federation Commander Ambassadors category on the Federation Commander forum.

FC Forum Hot Topics

The Federation Commander Site and Forum continues to grow as more gamers find it. We have added a new section to the Forum called Web Requests. If you have any comments, questions, or requests for our Graphics Director, this is the place to let him know. This month’s Hot Topics include a thread titled “Need for Speed” and "federation commander campaign " which can be found in the General Discussion category. For new players, the Federation Commander Forum is a little easier to manage whereas the Legacy Discus BBS can be a bit overwhelming.  Come see what the commotion is about and join the Federation Commander Forum now!

Don't forget our original (discus-based) BBS where most product development takes place. The most active topics of late include: SFBOL World League, Proposals and new ideas, Origins Scenario Planning, ORIGINS 2008, Module X1R, Fed Second-Line F-14 Carrier, and the always busy Questions on Ships.

FC Tactic of the Month
POINT-BLANK MISS

If you are moving with a base speed of 24 and your opponent launches a drone at you at point-blank range (in the same hex), immediately buy an acceleration point and the drone will not hit you.

This works because rule (4F2c) says that a weapon launched in the same hex will not impact until the next movement phase. It gets better. Rule (2A5) allows the target ship to move first and you can use that movement to exit the drone's hex before it can move (and before it can impact).

As an added bonus, if your ship moves into a hex the drone is not facing, you will force it to turn around the slow way, as rule (4F3e) prevents the drone from using a High Energy Turn unless it will hit (which it will not, because you moved).

The corollary of this is to not launch drones when in the same hex as your target when the target is moving with a base speed of twenty-four.

SFB Tactic of the Month
MAGELLANIC SHIELD REINFORCEMENT DETECTOR

One of the implications of Magellanic shielding is that the Volley Reduction Factor (VRF) of a shield is revealed even if a weapon fails to penetrate. As shield reinforcement also adds to VRF, it is possible to identify which shield has a large block of reinforcement, by firing a single long-range Medium or Early laser shot at range. If the VRF is greater than half the printed shield boxes, you know the shield has been reinforced and, within a point or two, even by how much.

FREE X-SHIPS FOR EVERYONE . . . WELL, ALMOST

In the late war period, the ultimate toy becomes available, the X-ship. Their Captains love them, the Admirals use them, logisticians put up with them.

All agree that they are very expensive. X-Ship production is limited by the availability of XTPs that are generated in limited quantities. There are two basic ways to increase XTPs. First is conquest, if you are conquering vast tracts of space and control most of the map, then the production of XTPs is not a concern for you. The other way is to "grow your own." (More...)

Korgan's Quarters aboard the D5 Renegade

3 February Y170

Patrolling sector 0803 near the WYN Radiation Zone

Korgan sat at his terminal composing a semi-official letter to Korath, sipping his protein drink and eating bits of some sweet (to Klingons anyway) green Tuka Fruit.

Wing Admiral Korath,
Please allow me to offer my highest congratulations to you on your promotion. The Empire will benefit greatly from your wisdom and tenacity. Also, it makes me proud to hear of your excellent success at Luminan IV. By now, you are attacking Kzintai itself! I know you will survive and succeed. I also know such pleasantries are not your primary interest and I suspect you would like to know something of my experience here on the Renegade. The following is a preliminary report. I will have the full report ready, as ordered, at the end of the month.

Ask Admiral Growler

FAST PATROL SHIPS
Tim Sargent asks: A PF is launched on Turn #1 with a plotted speed of 15, but under (K2.321) it is released at speed zero and then must use a mid-turn speed change to accelerate.
If the PF is launched on Impulse #8 (accelerating to speed 15 on Impulse #10), could it then start the following turn at speed 30, or would it have to wait until Impulse #10 to go speed 30? (More...)

Federation & Empire Q&A
THOSE PESKY THOLIANS

QUESTION: Can Special Attack Forces be used against the starbase over Tholia and the Planetary Defense Units on Tholia itself while a web is present? The web rules do not exclude SAFs, but then when the web rules were created there were no SAFs. It would, logically, seem that SAFs should be excluded.

ANSWER: Rule (512.1) in F&E2K states "Directed Damage cannot be used against a Tholian base or planet.
[Exception: SAFs (520.0) in Marine Assault.]" (More...)
